8. What should NWSL buyers change in availability and coverage workflows?

Is a draft-led recruitment database still appropriate?

Not as the organising assumption for current NWSL player acquisition. The CBA announced in 2024 eliminated entry and expansion drafts, provides free agency when contracts expire, requires player consent for trades and establishes guaranteed contracts, subject to the agreement’s provisions. These are established changes, not new November 2026 developments. (nwslplayers.com)

For the current cycle, the league’s official page states that negotiations for eligible players’ 2027 agreements opened on 1 July 2026. An opening eligibility list should not be mistaken for a continuously verified statement that every listed player remains available. (nwslsoccer.com)

Recommended NWSL Recruitment Coverage Gap Map fields:

  • Contract expiry and source date.
  • Player, club or mutual option, where verified.
  • Eligibility to negotiate and proposed start date.
  • Subsequent extension or signing announcement.
  • Player-consent status where relevant and lawfully available.
  • Separate confidence labels for supplier claims, official evidence and unknowns.

For NCAA women’s soccer scouting data, test direct recruitment and contract-status workflows rather than inherited NWSL draft logic. Require women’s competition samples throughout the trial; do not substitute a men’s-football demonstration.

What about the October 2026 High Impact Player settlement?

Treat this as an immediate document-retrieval priority. Front Office Sports reported on 23 October 2026 that the NWSL and players’ association settled the High Impact Player dispute, including removal of qualifying restrictions and the possibility of a limit on designated players per club. (frontofficesports.com)

Verification boundary: the executed settlement and a corresponding official consolidated league rule were not retrieved in this review. Accordingly, this report does not certify the operative eligibility criteria, implementation date or full financial mechanics.

What to do now: obtain the league’s current written instruction before approving a supplier’s HIP eligibility filter or compensation model. Keep the reported change on the legal change log, but mark the software requirement pending authoritative confirmation. Do not continue using December 2025 criteria without that check.
